It's hockey season!

La saison de hockey de la LNH 2006-2007 a débuté le 4 octobre dernier, au grand dam de ma femme. Etant originaire de la ville qui abrite le club de hockey le plus prestigieux de la planète, je suis comblé. En 2009 le club des Canadiens fêtera son centième anniversaire d’existence.

Un dilemme que j’entrevois au Japon sera de suivre le hockey de la LNH sur une base régulière. Ma femme a bien déniché un pub canadien à Shibuya ou on y rediffuse quelques parties mais je me vois mal faire le trajet à chaque fois pour satisfaire ma passion. Ceci dit, dès mon arrivée au Japon j’entamerai des recherches afin de trouver un service qui me permettra de regarder le hockey de la LNH et d’autres programmes que j’affectionne particulièrement.

Au fait, qu’en est-il du hockey au Japon? Disons que les Japonais sont avant tout friands de baseball, de soccer et de sumo. Bien qu’on y retrouve une ligue professionnelle depuis 1966, le Japon est bien loin de partager un engouement au hockey tel qu’on le retrouve au Canada. Néanmoins, la Asia League of Ice Hockey semble attirer son lot d'irréductibles et je compte bien assister à quelques parties lorsque je serai à Tokyo, question d’évaluer le niveau de compétition. A noter que les équipes professionnelles de hockey au Japon sont la propriété de compagnies et ne représentent pas la ville dans laquelle elles jouent mais plutôt les compagnies qui les commanditent (A l’exception des HC Nikko Ice Bucks).

Pour l’instant, je vais assister au match des Canadiens contre les Leafs de Toronto au Centre Bell les 28 octobre et 2 décembre prochain. Soirées inoubliables en perspective!

Unfortunately for my wife, NHL’s 2006-2007 hockey season is now underway. Being from Montreal, I have the incredible chance to cheer for hockey’s most prestigious organization in the world. In 2009 the Canadiens will celebrate their 100^th birthday.

One big concern I have about moving to Japan is how I will follow NHL hockey on a regular basis. My wife did find a Canadian pub in Shibuya which airs hockey games once in a while but I hardly see myself going there all the time. As soon as I will move to Edogawa I will try to find a cable company that will offer me the possibility to watch Canadian TV.

Speaking of hockey, how popular is the sport in Japan? The Japanese are mostly baseball, soccer and sumo fans. Despite the fact a professional hockey league has been running since 1966, the popularity of hockey in Japan is rather insignificant and is nowhere close to what we experience in Canada. However, the Asia League of Ice Hockey seems to draw some interest and I intend to watch a few games when I will move to Tokyo. I’m curious to see how different the game is played there. Another thing, companies own the professional hockey clubs in Japan. The hockey clubs play for the companies that are sponsoring them, not the city in which they play (at the exception of the HC Nikko Ice Bucks).

Meanwhile, I will be attending two games at the Bell Centre this year. On October 28 and December 2^nd I will have the incredible chance to watch the Habs (Canadiens’ nickname) play against the Toronto Maple Leafs. Exciting nights in perspective!
