O-bon

Hier soir nous avons célébré la fin du O-bon chez mes beaux-parents. Le O-bon est une fête bouddhiste dont le thème est la célébration des esprits des ancêtres. Selon la tradition, les esprits reviennent sur terre pendant la courte période du 13 au 16 août. Pour faciliter la venu sur terre des esprits, il faut allumer un petit feu, comme on voit sur la photo en bas. Il faut ensuite faire de même à la fin du O-bon afin d'aider les esprits à retourner dans les cieux. Les familles qui célèbrent le O-bon sont plutôt rares aujourd'hui au Japon, c'est devenu au fil des temps une fête familiale, un congé d'été. Les gens des grandes villes en profitent pour retourner dans leur ville natale. Ça se voyait d'ailleurs sur la ligne Tozai, l'achalandage était bien moindre. Quant à ma belle-famille, elle observe la tradition sans faute. Donc c'est ça, hier nous avons dit un au revoir aux esprits des ancêtres. Ils seront de retour l'an prochain, juré craché.

Yesterday evening I celebrated the end of O-bon with my in-laws. O-bon is a buddhist celebration to honor the deceased ancestors. From August 13 to 16 it is said the spirits come back to earth to spend some time with the livings. To facilitate the spirits' coming to earth a small bon fire must be light up, such as you can see on the pic below. The same must be done to enable the spirits to go back to the other world. Very few Japanese families nowadays celebrate O-bon, this religious celebration has become a Summer holiday where families come together and relax. People from the big cities normally go back to their hometowns during that period. I have no problem believing that, Tozai line was rather quiet this week. As for my in-laws, they are among the very few who celebrate O-bon. Yesterday we said goodbye to our ancestors' spirits, they will be back next year.
