Edogawa Shimachu Dancing Man!

Parfois il y a des gens qui font des métiers plutôt ordinaires, peut-être même dénigrés, mais qui accomplissent leur travail routinier en y ajoutant une touche toute spéciale. Aujourd'hui je parlerai donc du "Dancing Man". En fait, il s'agit plutôt d'un préposé à la sécurité du stationnement de Shimachu, un magasin de meubles situé à proximité de la station Nishi-Kasai (10 minutes de marche environ). Le gars s'est forgé toute une réputation dans le secteur avec son entrain et ses stepettes lorsqu'il est de service.

Sometimes you meet people doing rather ordinary jobs, some perhaps are even looked down on. However they accomplish their work in such an original way, to the extent they might leave you with a memorable impression. Today I will write about a particular parking lot security man in Edogawa. He has been working at Shimachu for at least 5 years now, a store located near Nishi-kasai station. He has earned a reputation in the area thanks to his "out of the ordinary and energetic performances" guiding traffic in and out of the parking lot.

L'histoire commence en 2006 lors de ma première visite au Japon (tiens, du déjà vu). Lors d'une randonnée en bagnole mon beau-frère me mentionna un truc à propos d'un quelconque "dancing man". D'après ses explications c'était quelque chose d'assez spectaculaire, un "must". Bien entendu ça a suscité en moi une certaine curiosité. J'ai bien eu l'occasion de le voir mais pour quelques secondes seulement, malhereusement. Quand même, ça m'avait laissé toute une impression.

The story begins in 2006, during my first visit in Japan. While riding around town my brother-in-law mentionned about a "dancing man", some guy dancing while directing traffic in a parking lot. According to him it was somewhat spectacular. I was of course curious to see the man, and did so shortly after. However, to my great disappointment I was only able to take a short peak of the show. Nevertheless, despite witnessing just a few seconds of the "Dancing Man" in action I had been impressed with what I had seen, and of course I was begging for more!

Lors de mon retour à Tokyo une de mes premières questions fut de m'enquérir sur le Dancing Man, à savoir s'il oeuvrait toujours dans les parages. A mon grand soulagement il était toujours fidèle au poste. Déjà lorsque j'habitais Montréal je m'étais juré qu'un jour j'étais pour écrire un carnet sur ce curieux personnage. Toutefois, j'avais toutes les difficultés de ce monde à le voir ou le prendre en photo. C'était pourtant pas les occasions qui manquaient. Premièrement, quand je passais dans le secteur, ou bien je n'avais pas la caméra avec moi, ou bien j'étais en voiture ou en autobus (#24), donc impossible d'arrêter pour prendre des clichés. Quelques fois je prenais une marche avec ma caméra, bien décidé de mener à terme ma mission, mais manque de pot je tombais toujours sur d'autres préposés qui tentaient, plutôt maladroitement, de faire comme le Dancing Man. Méfiez-vous des imitations!

When I came back in Tokyo in 2007 I made sure to inquire about the "Dancing Man". Was he still around? Immense relief the answer was yes. For such a long time I had promised myself I would write something about this man in my blog, but then I had all the trouble in the world to see him or take pics of him. For instance, I would often pass by while being in a car or in a bus (#24). Of course, that was too short to take a good quality video of the man in action. Sometimes I would take walks  in the area, but then I'd forget my camera. On several occasions I had the camera, but then the "Dancing Man" was not on duty (seems like I'm listing all the excuses in the book). The other security staff were trying hard to put up a vivid performance, some were quite clumsy too, but the fact was they just couldn't beat the real thing.

Quand même, je gardais espoir. Je savais qu'un jour j'étais pour avoir ma chance. C'est ainsi après le Kasai Matsuri, en marchant en direction de la maison des beaux-parents, je décida d'effectuer un léger détour afin de voir si le fameux "Dancing Man" était de service. A ma grande joie il était là! Ma femme lui a donc demandé si je pouvais le filmer et le prendre en photo. Je craignais une réponse négative mais au contraire il accepta d'emblée, je dirais même avec un air de défi! Il racontait même de revenir à chaque semaine car il ne cessait de s'améliorer! Une vraie réponse de gagnant. Alors voici une vidéo du Dancing Man. Je ne blague pas, c'est toujours comme ça avec lui, pas juste quand il y a un objectif de caméra fixé sur lui.

Anyway, I knew I would have my chance one day. It was just a question of time. That day was right after  the Kasai Matsuri. While I was walking towards my in-laws' house I decided to make a short detour. Maybe the Dancing Man was there? And he sure was! My wife then asked him if it was OK for me to take some pics and stuff. Would he decline my request? Not only was he willing to have his pic taken, he even told me to come back for more whenever I wanted since he was constantly improving! The kind of answer I wanted to hear. So here is a video of the "Dancing Man" in action. This guy is for real, he always gives his 100% at work. Surely enough that must be exhausting at the end of the day.

Malheureusement, je ne peux pas en dire plus sur le Dancing Man. Peut-être qu'un jour j'aurai l'occasion de m'entretenir avec et lui poser plus de questions. Je connaîs bien une ancienne employée de Lawson (un dépanneur) qui travailla non loin de Shimachu et qui le voyait de temps à autre. Il passait y chercher son café de temps à autre. A l'extérieur de son air de travail (la scène) il serait plutôt discret. Néanmoins, je compte bien accepter son invitation de venir le filmer à nouveau!

Unfortunately I can't say much more about the Dancing Man. Maybe one day I'll be lucky enough to have a conversation with him and ask a few questions. I do know a former Lawson employee working near Shimachu who saw him evey week. The Dancing Man would come for a coffee once in a while but he is apparently discrete when away from his "stage", the Shimachu parking. Anyway, you can bet I will accept his invitation to see his performance again in a nearby future.
