Sakura Report Edogawa-ku 2008 - 2
J'ai mis en ligne deux albums photos intiltulés Edogawa-ku Hanami 2008. Vous pouvez y jeter un coup d'oeil, ils sont dans la colonne de gauche. Je vous reviens avec d'autres détails de mes deux jours d'exploration sakura un peu plus tard faute de temps. Voici une carte de mes itinéraires. Le soleil était plus ou moins au rendez-vous. A vrai dire, j'ai dû faire assez vite. J'ai tout de même réussit un tour de force en couvrant presque la totalité de l'arrondissement à la marche et en vélo, en quelques heures seulement. C'est pas banal. J'aurai peut-être l'occasion de couvrir le reste jeudi prochain (si je suis chanceux). Je compte mettre en ligne un clip youtube.
My Hanami pictures are now available online, they are on the left column of this blog. I'm planning on writing more comments later about my 2 days experience of sakura exploration in Edogawa-ku. Below is a modified map of the "ku's" hanami spots, it's showing my itineraries. The weather was not ideal but I still managed to make the most of it despite the fact I only had a few hours to complete this personal task. Incredibly enough I visited most sakura places in the area, by walk and by bicycle. Now if I'm lucky enough I will visit the remaining sites this upcoming Thursday. However, the most spectacular places have been covered already. Also, I will post a youtube video of my experience shortly.

Sakura Report Edogawa-ku 2008 - 1
Cher amis, c'est avec un immense plaisir que je vous annonce le début de la saison des sakura (arbres cerisier) à Tokyo. Depuis le temps que j'attendais ce moment! Hélas, ce phénomène ne dure que quelques jours alors il faut en profiter au maximum. Ça explique probablement pourquoi ce spectacle éphémère suscitte tant d'engouement. Ceci dit, je compte arpenter Edogawa-ku au grand complet afin de prendre des photos. Il seront mis en ligne prochainement dans la section albums photos à gauche. Pour l'instant voici mes premières photos. Aussi, un peu plus bas voici une carte des sakura dans l'arrondissement d'Edogawa, prise sur le site officiel de la ville. Cette chronique risque de changer souvent donc revenez de temps à autre.
Dear friends, it's with an indescriptible joy I'm announcing you the start of the sakura season in Tokyo (cherry blossom trees). I had been waiting for that special moment for such a long time! Unfortunately, this natural occurence will only last a few days so better to fully enjoy the moment. That probably explains why this spectacle of nature has become such a big thing. This said, I'm planning to take lots of pictures and I want to cover most of the Edogawa-ku territory. I will put these pictures online when I have a break (most likely in the late evening) and you will find them in the photo albums section which is located on the left column. Here are some pics for now. Below that you will find an Edogawa-ku sakura map which is currently featured on the city's homepage.
Alors sans plus tarder je m'en vais prendre des photos. Ah mais je risque d'avoir faim en route! Pas de panique, tout est sur controle. J'emmènerai une Kit Kat saveur sakura avec moi!
OK enough with the writing I need to get out there and take some pics! Oh but wait, I might get hungry along the way. No problem, I'll just bring one of these, sakura flavored Kit Kat!

Timid Fujisan on a Sunny Saturday Morning
La tache blanche au milieu n'est pas un reflet mais la neige sur le Mont Fuji. La photo a été prise à Kasai Rinkai Koen, près de l'embouchure de la rivière Edogawa. Ce n'est pas tous les jours qu'on a la chance de voir ce spectacle.
Although not clear, you can see Mount Fuji in the middle of the picture. I took this picture on the shores of Kasai Rinkai Koen near Edogawa River. This is not something we see often, at least from where I was.

Tokyo Sea Life Park - Kasai Rinkai Koen
Puisque le vendredi était gris et venteux, j'ai donc décidé d'aller jeter un coup d'oeil à l'aquarium de Kasai Rinkai Koen, à peine 15 minutes de marche de chez nous. Je n'avais pas pu visiter le site l'été dernier puisque je m'y étais présenté un mercredi et la plupart des attractions du parc sont fermés pendant cette journée. J'avais donc garder l'activité en banque et je peux affirmer sans détour qu'une visite à ce site en vaut la chandelle; sur le plan architectural l'aquarium est une merveille, l'imposante entrée de verre conçue par l'architecte Yoshio Taniguchi est entourée d'eau et quand on l'observe sous certains angles elle semble flottée sur la baie de Tokyo. Bien sûr, les poissons aussi sont magnifiques. Finalement, je dirais même que c'est un endroit idéal pour relaxer car dans certaines sections la musique est apaisante et nous sommes confortablement installés pour observer les poissons.
Friday was cloudy and windy so I decided to check out Kasai Rinkai Koen’s aquarium. Despite the fact the site is barely a 15 minutes of walk from my apartment this was my first visit. I had tried to go there last summer but I had gone on a Wednesday and most attractions in the park are closed on that day. Therefore I had decided to bank this activity for the future. My impressions? Overall I can honestly say this place is a must, especially if you live in the area. Even the architecture of the aquarium is worth checking out. Architect Yoshio Taniguchi’s immense glass-steel entrance appears to be floating on Tokyo Bay depending on which angle you’re looking at the structure. Of course, the place being an aquarium you will find plenty of spectacular and colorful fishes. It was a very relaxing experience as I spent some time watching the fishes while sitting comfortably with nice background music.
Mais attention, encore une fois. Parce nous sommes à Tokyo et qu'il y a du monde partout, et que la notion d'espace individuel à la nord américaine ne s'applique pas du tout, il faut donc se présenter tôt à l'ouverture vers 9:30. Plus tard il est presque assuré que des hordes de visiteurs débarqueront et l'expérience ne sera alors pas aussi apaisante, risque même de devenir très frustrante. Notamment si vouz tenez à prendre des photos.
However, be aware that we’re in Tokyo and there are lots of people here. If you want to maximize your experience, if you want it to be relaxing, have opportunities to take good quality pictures, then I suggest you come early (doors open at 9:30AM). A weekday would be preferable as well. I can only imagine how much different my experience would had been if I had gone there on the weekend around noon. Indeed some of the fish tanks are small and you might have to wait for a while before getting a fairly good glimpse at the fishes.
On y retrouve des poissons de la baie de Tokyo et de tous les océans de la planète. Il y a aussi une section de pingouins, et des reconstitutions de divers environnements aquatiques (un peu comme au Biodôme à Montréal). Vraiment, je compte y retourner pendant une journée ensoleillée. Featured are fishes from Tokyo Bay and from all the oceans of the world. There are also penguins and some aquatic environment reconstitutions similar to what you can find at the Montreal Biodome. Le clou de la visite était l'exposition d'un specimen coelacanthe, connu aussi sous le nom de poisson-fossile puisqu'il a peu évolué depuis 350 millions d'années. Ce specimen fut pêché il y a quelques mois (mai 2007)en Indonésie. Le speciment est exposé au Tokyo Sea Life Park jusqu'au 31 mars 2008.
Finally, the visit ended with a display of rare fish specimen called coelacanth. This one was caught by Indonesian fishermen in May 2007. It will be displayed at the Kasai Rinkai Koen aquarium until March 31st 2008.

Happy St.Patrick's Day!
S’il y a un événement à Montréal auquel que je ne pourrai pas assister et qui me manque particulièrement c’est bien celui de la parade de la St-Patrick. Il y règne une bonhomie toute particulière. Les gens sont tous de bonne humeur et ne se prennent pas trop au sérieux. Bien entendu il y a ce vert omniprésent qui frappe aux yeux et qu’on ne voit, hélas, pas assez souvent. Assister à cette parade est aussi pour plusieurs une façon de faire un pied de nez à l’hiver qui ne finit plus; certains font les durs sachant très bien que le printemps se pointera bientôt. Ah oui j’oubliais, c’est aussi une occasion en or pour d’autres de se saouler en public. Il faut bien en profiter quand même (en passant il n’est pas interdit de boire de l’alcool en public ici au Japon). Néanmoins, si vous tenez à voir un spectacle un peu moins édifiant la prochaine fois je vous conseille d'aller faire un tour à la station Charlevoix environ deux heures après la parade (je plains les concierges qui doivent nettoyer la station!). Comme quoi il y a parfois un prix à payer quand on fête un peu trop fort!
Of all the events taking place in Montreal, the St. Patrick’s parade is among the ones I’m missing the most. The atmosphere is just great; everyone is having a good time and people don’t take themselves too seriously. There’s lots of smiles and laughter everywhere you go. On Ste-Catherines street, in the subway, etc... There’s also that nice color green everywhere. Too bad we don’t get to see this color more often. Also, I think attending the parade in Montreal has an extra symbolic meaning for many (which you might not find elsewhere). It’s like a celebration marking the end of the harsh Canadian winter. Temperatures are still cold but everyone knows Spring is around the corner. Finally, and before I forget, St. Patrick’s is also a great occasion for some to get drunk in public. I guess one has to seize every opportunity! (keep in mind drinking alcohol in public is not illegal in Japan). Then again, if you want to see the aftermaths of celebrating too much then I suggest you go to Charlevoix metro station a few hours after the parade. Those poor people cleaning up that station on that day earn every penny of their salaries.
Ceci dit il y a tout de même une parade de la St-Patrick à Tokyo (Omotesando) mais ce n’est pas la même chose. Puisqu’il m’était impossible d’assister à l’événement montréalais j’ai alors pris l’initiative d’organiser quelque chose chez moi avec l’aide de ma femme. Comme en témoigne le montage photo ci-dessous nous étions fins prêts. Nous étions même chaussés adéquatement pour l’événement! Aussi, ma famille au Canada avait pris soin de m’envoyer des décorations. La consigne était de porter du vert et d’être de bonne humeur. Plusieurs de nos amis ont répondu à l’appel et sont venus célébrer avec nous. Il y avait de la bière verte, de la Guinness et de la poutine! Finalement, c’est pas pour faire…disons grincer les dents à des amis mais il faisait un magnifique soleil dehors et un beau 20C. Ah comme la neige me manque!
That said there is a St. Patrick’s parade in Tokyo (Omotesando) but it’s just not the same (the Montreal parade was at its 184th edition this year, making it the oldest in the world). Since I couldn’t attend the Montreal event I, along with my wife, decided to have our own St. Patrick’s party here in Edogawa, Tokyo. As you can see in the photo montage below we were more than ready for our own event. We were even wearing St. Patrick’s sneakers for the occasion! My family in Canada also chipped in and sent us decorations which impressed our guests. Several of our friends came and celebrated with us. They were all wearing some green and most importantly they were all in good mood. We had green beer, Guinness and poutine! Finally, the forecast also contributed to the success of our party. It was bright sunny outside with a sweet 20C. Man do I miss snow or what?

Shinozaki Station - Toei Shinjuku 20
Aujourd'hui j'entame un projet qui tramait dans ma tête depuis un bon moment déjà. J'aimerais évetuellement inclure des images de toutes les stations de métro qui déservent l'arrondissement Edogawa sur mon blog. On en dénombre 11 sur le territoire et elles sont réparties sur 5 lignes. Evidemment, je ne compte pas accomplir cela du jour au lendemain. De temps à autre une nouvelle station sera mise en évidence, aléatoirement. Il faut dire qu'il y a des stations que je connaîs très bien et d'autres où je n'y ai jamais mis les pieds. Donc, la couverture sera forcément inégale. Néanmoins, le but recherché et d'abord et avant tout de mettre en ligne quelques clichés et de faire un survol assez léger sur ces endroits différents. Ce sera également pour moi une chance de découvrir de nouveaux lieux. Autre difficulté auquelle je fais face dans l'accomplissement de ce projet: la prise de photos. En effet, j'essaye d'être le plus discret possible car je ne veux pas trop pertuber ou rendre incomfortable des usagers (c'est tout un défi!). Question de politesse, voilà c'est tout. Donc, le résultat est que ça ne donne pas toujours les meilleures photos mais bon on fera avec ce qu'on a.
I'm now going ahead with something I've wanted to do for a long time: covering all the train/subway stations of Edogawa-ku on my blog. In total there are 5 lines (11 stations) servicing the area. Of course, this personal task will take some time to accomplish and complete. So once in a while you can expect to find an entry regarding one of the stations around here. Some of those stations I know very well but the truth is I'm not familiar with most of them. Therefore, this will be also an opportunity for myself to discover new grounds. The goal I'm seeking here is to have a general overview, who knows we might find out interesting information in the process. One challenge I will face when doing this project is taking pictures and filming videos without disturbing the people as much as possible (note I said "as much as possible" I mean there's people everywhere here!). It's simply a question of respect. Maybe what I'm trying to say here is that some of the pictures will most probably not be of best quality but they will be "acceptable" under the circumstances.
Nous débutons donc avec la station Shinozaki, station de la ligne Toei Shinjuku inaugurée en 1986. Le symbole de la station est un arbre kusunoki (camphrier). On retrouve ce symbole un peu partout dans la station, sur les murs et sur le plancher. J'avous d'emblée je ne suis pas un habitué de ce coin d'Edogawa; a part du grand parc Shinozaki et de Sports Land qui sont dans les parages, je ne suis pas vraiment en mesure d'en dire plus. Evidemment comme à proximité d'à peu près toutes les stations de métro de Tokyo le coin regorge de salles de Pachinko et de restaurants fast-food. Si par chance un lecteur de ce blog connaîs d'autres informations à propos de Shinozaki, alors je serais très heureux d'en apprendre plus sur le sujet. Vous pouvez m'envoyer des photos également.
The first station who gets the honor of being covered is Shinozaki (for no any particular reason I'd like to add here). Shinozaki station is on the Toei Shinjuku line and it opened to public in 1986. The station's symbol, the kusunoki tree (Camphor tree), is omnipresent in the station. You will find it on most walls of the station and on the floor too. I have to admit apart from Shinozaki park and Sports Land I don't know much about the surroundings. Of course, you'll have the usual Pachinko parlor and fast-food restaurants. There are also 2 grocery stores. However, if some of you have some information to share regarding Shinozaki it would be greatly appreciated. You can send pics too.
Voici un aperçu extérieur de la station (la station compte deux entrées). Il y a des cloches en forme de kusunoki sur une des entrée. Elles sonnent à toutes les heures.
Here are views outside of the station (the station has 2 entrances). There are bells set up as kusunoki tress on one of the entrances and they ring to mark the hour.

General Edogawa Pictures Taken From Minami-kasai 7 Chome
Voici une vue de la pointe sud de l'arrondissement Edogawa. On peut apercevoir le pont Maihama ohashi qui enjambe la rivière Edogawa. L'autoroute qui traverse le pont mène à Tokyo Disney, au théâtre du Cirque du soleil, et un peu plus loin à l'aéroport international de Narita (40 minutes environ).
This is a view of the south eastern tip of Edogawa-ku. The bridge crossing the Edogawa river is called Maihama ohashi. The highway crossing it leads to Tokyo Disney, the Cirque du soleil's theater and eventually Narita airport (40 minutes drive).
Au loin à gauche, et derrière la bâtisse jaune pâle, voici les immenses complexes résidentiels Koshahaime. Puis au milieu figure la grande roue Daiya to hana, au Kasai rinkai koen. Cette photo, c'est aussi le coin où j'habite!
The "Koshahaime Projects" can be seen out in the far left and in the middle, behind that light yellow building. Although not very clear further down you can see the Daiya to hana ferris wheel located in Kasai rinkai koen. Another detail I'd like to add regarding this picture; it's also where I live!
Cette rue mène à la Kan-nana et au Horie rikkyo (communément appelé "le pont bleu" en bon québécois). Photos à venir.
This street leads to the Horie rikkyo, which could simply be referred to as "the blue bridge", a convenient landmark if one is planning to take a taxi from Kasai station to home.
Entre les deux pylônes au loin on peut voir une bâtisse brune, c'est l'épicerie Tobu.
Voici une vue de la section Fuji Sogo recreation koen. C'est là qu'on retrouve l'oeuvre des statues intitulée "Hope".
That hill is part of the Fuji section of the Sogo recreation koen. On the top you can see the "Hope statues" (Close up pictures)
Direction nord, Higashi-kasai. On peut voir le Kasai Riverside Mall (Ito Yokado) et Homes en haut à droite.
Facing north this view points to Higashi-kasai. The Kasai Riverside Mall (Ito Yokado) and Homes can be seen top right.
Voici la partie la plus à l'est du Sogo recreation koen. Jeunes joueurs de soccer et de baseball étaient au rendez-vous. Derrière le terrain de baseball on retrouve Ponyland. La préfecture Chiba débute de l'autre côté de la rivière Edogawa.
Finally this is a view of the easternmost part of the Sogo recreation koen. Lots of kids, lots of action going on such as soccer and baseball games. A smaller Ponyland can be found behind the baseball field. The Edogawa River marks the boundary between Edogawa-ku-Tokyo, and Chiba prefecture.
