Sous la Shinkawa / Underneath Shinkawa

La Shinkawa est une petite rivière qui se trouve tout près de la tour Funabori. Comme le démontre la carte, elle coupe l'arrondissement nord-sud. En gros, c'est un endroit magnifique pour faire de la marche ou pour faire du vélo. Plusieurs citoyens en profitent d'ailleurs, des courageux se lèvent même à quatre heures du matin pour faire leur randonnée matinale (que voulez-vous, j'avais bien du temps à perdre lorsque j'étais affecté par le décallage horaire!). C'est aussi une voie pratique pour se rendre à la station Funabori. De plus, il n'est pas rare de voir des gens s'y adonner à la pêche de temps à autre. Des arbres sakura seront bientôt plantés tout au long de la rivière, ce qui aura comme résultat d'embellir encore davantage les lieux. Les travaux sont entamé depuis quelque temps déjà et j'espère que j'aurai de belles photos à vous montrer l'année prochaine. Soyons patients.

Shinkawa River can be found south of the Funabori tower. As shown on the map, the river seperates the "ku" north and south. It's a wonderful place to take a walk or to just sit down and have a chit chat with friends. Some people wake up as early as 4:00AM to do their daily walk along the river (alright I had alot of time to waste when I was struggling with jet lag a few weeks ago). Also, many residents use this path to go to Funabori station. Finally, once in a while you will see people fishing but I'm not sure if I would recommend eating the fish from there. Anyway, Edogawa city workers recently started planting sakura trees along the river and that will make Shinkawa surroundings look even better. Hopefully, next year I will be able to post magnificient pictures of this new scenery. Meanwhile, let's take a look at another interesting thing about the river.

Lorsqu'on se promène le long de la rivière, à l'ouest, on remarque d'étranges édicules ça et là des deux côtés. On ne peut pas y entrer, seulement en sortir. Un jour j'ai remarqué qu'il y a avait une vieille photo sur un des édicule qui montrait un stationnement intérieur sous la rivière. Question de satisfaire ma curiosité j'ai donc décidé de m'y aventurer afin de voir de mes propres yeux. Effectivement, on y retrouve un très long stationnement. Le tout est bien aménagé. J'en ai profité pour prendre des photos car je sais qu'il y a des curieux parmi vous.

When you walk along the river towards west, you can notice strange buildings on both sides. They somewhat look like subway entrances and there are a few of them. However, the doors are locked so you can't go in (but you can get out). One day I noticed on one of those buildings that there was a picture showing an underground parking lot, underneath the river. I was quite curious so I inquired about the entrance and decided to take a look. Indeed, there is a parking lot underneath the river and it's quite long too! I took some pictures since I know some of you are as curious as me (see below).   

En tout cas, pas question de gaspiller l'espace ici. On est bien loin du Canada ou aux Etats-unis ou on a le luxe de couper des boisés et étendre de l'asphalte à perte de vue. Selon des recherches que j'ai effectué sur Internet, l'arrondissement Edogawa s'est même mérité un prix d'excellence à l'édition 2004 des "Japan Best Parking Awards" pour ce stationnement. C'est pour vous dire combien on ne rigole pas lorsqu'il est question d'aménagement urbain, même pour un stationnement.

So, the verdict? Well there is no such thing as wasting space here. As you can see, we are quite far from Canada or the US where forests are wiped out in order to make place for huge parking lots. I've done some research on the Internet and found out Edogawa-ku had earned a prize at the 2004 edition of the "Japan Best Parking Awards" for this underground parking. Just to tell you how much urban planning is taken seriously here, especially when it's about parking lots.
